Tracks4Australia is more a pure map product than their African cousin. Information and eco-travel is not emphasized. The map however is very good outside of large cities and the result of the contributions from travelers as well as 1:250K data licensed from Geoscience Australia.

Tracks4Australia has two map products: a free version and a PRO version. The PRO version is very reasonably priced at AUS$ 55 (less than Eur 40) and has besides the roads and tracks, which are the same on both versions, more mapping features like lakes, national parks, water holes etc.

Try the free version and compare it with the detail of the Garmin maps and you will see that outside of the cities T4Aus is much more detailed.

T4Aus can be used with Garmin’s Mapsource software and uploaded to a mapping capable GPSr from Garmin.

An alternative and completely free product called ShonkyMaps is available for download at GPSAustralia . Shonkymaps is also based on the data from Geoscience Australia. Until now (September 2007) no input from users has been used to update this map. By the way, GPSAustralia has a very good forum for all things related to GPS.
